There are entire books, magazines, websites and tv shows devoted to the discussion about food in Toronto, so we won’t try to duplicate their excellent efforts here. Some good websites for restaurant ideas and advice are:
http://www.torontolife.com/ (also a magazine, Toronto Life; a recommended resource)
http://www.chowhound.com/

Some good areas for restaurants are:
Little Italy – Italian (of course!)
Chinatown – Chinese and Vietnamese
King Street West – modern fusion
Richmond Hill – Chinese food
Yorkville – upscale modern fusion
Bloor West - varied, generally good cheap eats near Toronto University
Yonge and Eglington – varied and generally very good
Tipping
Tipping for services (such as restaurants, taxis, pubs - yes, even for a beer!) is generally 10%-15% with 15% reserved for really good service. Be sure to calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount, and not the total bill (which will include the tax amount). A good general rule of thumb is to tip the value of the taxes (note that GST + PST is a total of 12%).
As visitors, you’ll generally be tolerated for leaving a small tip if you so choose.
